The discovery of these Paleolithic tools on the floor of the North Sea is very significant, one of the few instances where such finds have been reasonably well documented. We know that there are vast terrestrial landscapes submerged on the continental shelves, but the archaeological exploration of these landscapes is in its infancy. This discovery provides further evidence that dredging and other human impacts to these submerged landscapes should be carefully considered, with input and monitoring by archaeologists. It is outstanding that the general location of this discovery can be reconstructed--and dredging in the area redirected--but it would be wonderful to have more specific details about the location, context, and contents of the site that produced these rare finds. Good job, Jan Muelmeester!

This indeed is great news for the archaeological and history of science communities: this discovery will throw much light in some of our misunderstandings about human evolution.

[...] Wessex Archaeology News » Evidence of Ice Age hunters found below North Sea Handaxes have been dredged up from the North Sea. They’re thought to date from around 100kyr, when the area was land. Because they’re so old they’d also be Neanderthal rather than modern human artefacts. [...]
